How do you choose the right CNC machine for your workshop?

How do you choose the right CNC machine for your workshop?

Choosing the right CNC machine for manufacturing windows and doors depends primarily on the production process in your workshop. Not every manufacturer works in the same way; profile brands, profile ranges, fittings, specific machining steps, etc. can vary and help determine which machines are best suited to your production process.

Manufacturers that primarily produce PVC windows and doors prioritise speed, automation and a seamless flow between the various production stages. The production process for aluminium windows and doors is different. Consequently, each material requires a different approach and a different combination of CNC solutions.

Of course, the volume, the number of operators and the size of the workshop also play a crucial role.

Do you need to saw and work with wood?

Do you need to carry out a lot of sawing and milling work as part of your production process? If so, you will usually need a CNC saw and a machining centre. This machine cuts profiles to length whilst simultaneously carrying out additional machining operations such as drilling and milling.

Fully automated CNC machining centres are frequently used in PVC processing. This machine combines several machining steps into a single process. It is designed primarily for speed and smooth operation, even when processing steel-reinforced profiles.

When machining aluminium, CNC sawing and machining centres are usually used. These machines are designed for high precision and accuracy. They are suitable for hard materials and ensure a clean surface finish. Typical machining operations for aluminium include:

  • Cutting profiles to length

  • Creating recesses and openings

  • End-face machining

  • Machining for fittings and assembly

Do you need to tighten any screws?

If you frequently need to reinforce PVC profiles and these are to be reinforced in large quantities, it is best to opt for a fully automatic screwdriving machine.

In the case of PVC, an automated screw extruder is usually used, which anchors the steel reinforcement within the profile. For large production runs, this is integrated into a fully automated production line, where higher output and greater autonomy are required.

Is counter-profiling necessary?

Counter-profiling ensures that different profiles fit together perfectly. For PVC and For aluminium. These CNC machines ensure:

  • Precise joints

  • Less rework

  • A cleaner finish

  • Greater consistency in production

Should one weld (polish) or press?

Welding, with or without polishing, is a typical part of PVC production and often forms an important part of the entire production line. Once the profiles have been cut to size, the corners are joined using a CNC welding machine. A deburring machine then automatically removes the excess weld seam, resulting in a smooth and clean corner with no visible joint. The process is usually fully automated:

  1. The angle sections are heated by a heating element

  2. The parts are pressed together

  3. The joint cools

  4. The weld is countersunk

With aluminium, this step is not required, as aluminium profiles are joined mechanically using angle clamps and fasteners. In aluminium production, the focus is therefore even more on precise machining and assembly.

When working with aluminium, a corner press is usually used, which mechanically presses the profiles together to form a stable and neat corner joint without visible fixings. This is particularly important for modern, slim-profile designs, where precision and finish are paramount.

Do you need to drill and mill?

In the case of PVC, simple milling and drilling operations are often integrated into the sawing and machining centre. With aluminium, milling plays a much more significant role in the production process. Complex profile shapes and precise cut-outs require high-performance CNC machines capable of working with extreme precision. Aluminium milling machines are frequently used for:

  • Lock cases

  • Hinges

  • Concealed fittings

  • Facade constructions

Would you like to automate the assembly process?

The decision to automate the assembly process depends primarily on the extent to which you wish to increase speed, ensure repeatability and reduce manual labour in your production. The higher your production volume and the greater the standardisation, the more attractive full automation becomes.

Do you work with PVC and, above all, prioritise speed and high throughput in your production? If so, you will often opt for a highly automated system capable of handling several assembly steps. This enables you to work faster, with fewer manual steps and consistent processing quality, even when producing larger quantities.

Do you work with aluminium and place particular emphasis on precise and controlled assembly? If so, you will generally opt for no other automation solution.

Do you need automatic sorting machines?

Automatic sorting machines use buffers to ensure a smoother workflow between the various machines in the workshop. Profiles are automatically buffered and passed on to the next stage in the production process, thereby minimising downtime and making the entire line operate more efficiently.

Sorting systems are primarily designed to:

  • Greater clarity in the workshop

  • Fewer manual handling operations

  • A smoother workflow

  • Less downtime between machines

  • Buffer areas between different stages of the production process

  • Ergonomic solutions for operators

With PVC, this often occurs between different stages of the process, such as sawing, welding, polishing and assembly. In aluminium production, sorting systems primarily help to keep larger production processes organised, particularly when several CNC machines are linked together.

Choosing the right CNC machine depends on your production process

PVC and aluminium each require a different approach in the workshop. In PVC production, the main focus is on speed and automation throughout the entire production line, whilst aluminium processing requires not only speed but also a high degree of precision and care to prevent damage.

When choosing the right CNC machine, the most important factors are therefore the material you are machining and the structure of your production process.
