In the modern manufacturing industry, speed, precision and automation are more important than ever. Companies that process aluminium or PVC profiles are therefore increasingly looking for smart solutions to produce more efficiently – with fewer errors and lower costs. A CNC machining centre plays a key role in this.
But what exactly is a CNC machining centre? How does it work? And why are more and more manufacturing companies investing in this technology?
At Soenen Hendrik, we’ll explain everything you need to know.
What is a CNC machining centre?
A CNC machining centre is a computer-controlled machine that automatically carries out various machining operations on profiles or components. CNC stands for ‘Computer Numerical Control’: the machine operates on the basis of digital programmes and carries out machining operations with extreme precision without any manual intervention.
When it comes to aluminium and PVC profiles, a CNC machining centre often combines several processes in a single line:
Sawing
Milling
Drilling
Thread cutting
Profiling
End-face machining
Flow drilling
Marking, laser marking, inkjet marking, …
Automatic output
This enables profiles to be processed fully automatically in accordance with a predefined job file.
How does a CNC machining centre work?
A modern CNC sawing and machining centre generally consists of three main areas:
1. Collection point
Here, several profiles are automatically loaded into the magazine. Some systems can load up to twenty or even more. The machine knows the order in which the profiles were loaded and positions and clamps them fully automatically, with the utmost precision and speed, as they pass through the CNC unit.
2. Machining unit
All the processing steps take place in this area:
Cutting at angles of 45 and 135 degrees, as well as at various other angles where required, or making V-cuts where necessary
Milling and drilling
Counter-profiling
Special machining operations for seals
Marking
State-of-the-art systems are equipped with a large number of CNC axes and high-speed motors, enabling various machining operations to be carried out simultaneously at the highest speed and with the utmost precision.
3. Dispensing station
Once machining is complete, the finished parts are automatically discharged, labelled and, where necessary, forwarded to other stations via intermediate buffers or to a fully automated sorting robot, which automatically sorts the fully finished profiles into a profile wall.
The key benefits of a CNC machining centre
1. High precision
As the entire process is computer-controlled, errors are kept to a minimum. Each processing step is carried out precisely in accordance with the set parameters and the job file sent by the host programme.
The clamping mechanism is perfectly designed, allowing you to work at very high speeds and with great precision.
2. Increased productivity
Several machining operations are carried out in a single pass and with a single set-up. This saves you time and significantly increases throughput.
3. No more manual labour
A CNC machine can operate largely autonomously. Operators need to intervene less and can focus on other tasks. This also ensures optimal utilisation of the workplace and increased safety.
4. Less material wastage
Smart software optimises cutting patterns and offcuts, thereby making more efficient use of raw materials.
5. Consistent quality
Automation ensures that every part is manufactured identically. As a result, human error is rare.
What should you bear in mind when choosing a CNC machining centre?
Not all machines are the same. When selecting a CNC solution, the following factors play an important role:
Number of CNC axes
Control system brand
Control system type
Level of automation
Software integration
Service and support
Future-proofing
Stability of the design
Possibility of modular integration into a production line
Possibility of connection to other units
